Dr. Mao obtained her Bachelor of Science (major in Anatomical Science) from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She then obtained her Bachelor of Dental Surgery at The University of Hong Kong.

After her studies, she moved overseas to pursue her career. Dr. Mao developed a special interest in Temporomandibular Joint Disorder and Sleep Medicine. She is passionate about getting to the root of patient’s pain and helping them through tailor-made treatments.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder

  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects your mandible (lower jaw) to your skull
  • Most common symptoms of Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder include:
    1. clicking or popping sound from the TMJ
    2. limited mouth opening
    3. stiffness in the jaw muscles
    4. headache
  • In-depth clinical examination and detail questionnaire analysis will be performed for diagnosis
  • Provide treatment to relieve pain and restore normal function from TMJ
  • Occlusal appliance and other possible treatment

Snoring

  • Snoring is the hoarse or loud sound that occurs when air flows past through relaxed tissue in your throat, causing the tissue to vibrate during sleep
  • Snoring is noisy, it may disrupt you and your partner’s sleep
  • Factors which facilitate snoring are: aging, obesity, anatomical or functional abnormalities, sleep position, medications.
  • Snoring can be reduced through the use of anti-snoring device

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the reduction or pause in breathing during sleep due to obstruction of airway
  • May or may not be associated with snoring
  • Waking up gasping or choking
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • According to the severity of the Obstructive Sleep Apnea, an appropriate treatment and management will be provided
